Symphony No. 11 is in one movement. It is concerned with escaping from the clutches of a six-note chord (reading upwards from the middle of the bass clef: D, G#, B, C, Eb, A) which, on several occasions halts the progress of the music like a roadblock, and on others causes it to stagnate as though paralysed. This obstacle is finally defeated as the music moves towards a major seventh chord on Gb, which contains none of the notes of the roadblock chord.
The symphony is dedicated to the conductor Kenneth Woods who has done much to bring my music to the attention of the public.
